There are many factors that can determine your teeth alignment: genetics, thumbsucking as a child, the loss of a tooth or teeth, and traumatic accidents to the face. The misalignment of your teeth can lead to other oral health problems, including dental malocclusion (a bad bite), abnormal enamel wear, trouble speaking and chewing, as well as toothaches and jaw pain. If Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang notices any of these problems during your dental exam, they may recommend orthodontic treatment. Invisalign is great for both adults and teens who want straighter teeth without the pain, hassle, and appearance of metal braces. While they do need to be worn for most of the time, Invisalign can be taken out for eating and brushing your teeth, as well as for special events and playing sports. They are more discreet than metal braces that can cut and poke the inside of your cheek. Your friends and loved ones may not be able to tell that you are wearing your Invisalign tray.

Your first set of Invisalign trays will be created using your PlanScan® 3D digital impressions at Luminous Dental Studio. No gooey impressions will have to be made. We will send the images out to have your Invisalign made. You will return to our office for your fitting and receive your first set of trays. We will teach you how to care for your teeth and trays before you leave. You will need to wear your aligners at least 20 – 22 hours each day for the system to work — ideally removing them only for eating and cleaning. Over time, you will advance to the next set of aligners as the first set has gently moved your teeth into a new position. You will need to schedule follow-up appointments every 4 – 6 weeks at Luminous Dental Studio to have the fit of your aligners checked. We will take more digital impressions so new sets of aligners can be made as your teeth move. The length of time that you use Invisalign will vary based on the original position of your teeth and your cosmetic goals, but most patients wear aligners for about one year.

Once your teeth are in alignment, it's important to keep your teeth from moving back to their old position. We will talk to you about wearing a custom retainer to maintain your newly aligned smile. We will talk to you about how often to wear your retainer and how to care for it at home. Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang will continue to observe and document your teeth alignment and bite during your dental exams to ensure your teeth remain in the right position.
