Overview

Ask our experienced general dentists, Dr. Minho Chang or Dr. Nam Kim, about our easy-to-apply fluoride treatment to see if they are right for your smile. Everyone needs a little extra protection against tooth decay. We have used fluoride (mineral solution) as a preventive tool against cavities and tooth decay for decades. While the fluoride only stays on the teeth for a short while, it is enough time to make a grand impact on your teeth. Professional fluoride treatments at Luminous Dental Studio in Frisco, TX can help children with developing teeth and adults with weakened enamels to slow the progression of tooth decay and tooth loss. Learn more about professional fluoride treatments (and which flavors we might have for you) during your next dental cleaning.

Best Candidates

Fluoride treatments can be given to patients of all ages, though it is most commonly given to younger patients who have newly emerged teeth or who have not developed a good oral care routine at home yet. We also recommend fluoride treatments for adult patients whose drinking water is not fluoridated or who are prone to cavities. Luminous Dental Studio offers different fluoride formulas if you have specific needs, such as neutral sodium fluoride if you have dry mouth and acidulated phosphate fluoride if you have dental restorations (crowns, bridges, or dentures). We have a variety of flavors to make these treatments taste better.

What to Expect

Fluoride treatments are performed every six months after your professional dental cleaning and exam. If you have a preference, we will offer you several flavors of the fluoride treatment to choose from before your dental hygienist applies it to your teeth. Your fluoride treatment may be a gel, foam, or paint-on varnish that will be applied to the surface of your teeth and left on for 1 – 4 minutes so that the solution can penetrate your enamel. Rinsing your mouth out would be counterproductive. We may ask you to spit as much of it out as you can, or your hygienist may use suction to clear out the remainder of the fluoride. It is best to avoid drinking, eating, brushing your teeth, or rinsing for at least 30 minutes to get the full benefit from the treatment.

Follow-Up

If you swallow some of the fluoride treatment, then you may experience some nausea. This should diminish within a 24-hour period following treatment. In some cases, Dr. Chang or Dr. Kim may prescribe fluoride supplements for you or your child to take at home to incorporate in your hygiene routine. Since fluoride can be toxic in high amounts, adults should be careful and keep supplements out of reach of children. While these treatments help to strengthen the enamel, you should continue or establish a good home oral care routine, including brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You should also attend your scheduled dental exams and cleanings at Luminous Dental Studio so we can assess your need for the extra fluoride.
