Overview
When you have a persistent toothache, you may have tooth decay or an infection within your tooth that you cannot see. When caught early, tooth decay can be treated with a dental filling or a similar procedure to clean the enamel and seal the area. However, if the enamel is too damaged, bacteria can get in and cause chaos for your inner tooth with infection. Known as endodontic treatment, a root canal at Luminous Dental Studio removes the infected pulp from the tooth, cleans the cavity, and then uses a filling material to seal the tooth. A restorative crown or bridge may be necessary to restore the strength your tooth needs to help you chew properly and keep your surrounding teeth in their position. Root canal treatments stop tooth decay from spreading to other teeth. At Luminous Dental Studio, we understand if you have reservations about visiting a dentist when you are experiencing the pain an infected tooth can bring. A root canal is a very common dental therapy, yet many people put off going to see a dentist for a toothache because of dental anxiety. General dentists Dr. Minho Chang, Dr. Nam Kim, and their team will do their very best to make sure you are at ease and relaxed. Keep in mind that we offer nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) if you have dental anxiety. Contact Luminous Dental Studio to schedule a consultation in Frisco, TX to learn more about our root canal treatments.

An infection in the pulp of a tooth can be caused by a deep crack or cavity in the tooth or dental trauma. Some of the most common signs that you may have an infected tooth are tooth or jaw pain, swelling or discoloration of the gums around the tooth, and changes in the color of the tooth. If the infected pulp is not removed, it will become increasingly painful as the infection spreads to other parts of your teeth and gums. Schedule an appointment at Luminous Dental Studio as soon as you feel or see something abnormal in your mouth. If you have anxieties or reservations about visiting the dentist, please ask us about sedation options to keep you calm and comfortable during your exam and treatment.
What To Expect
Before the root canal, you will discuss your sedation and/or anesthetic options with Dr. Chang or Dr. Kim. We want you to feel at ease and relaxed while you are in the treatment chair. Many patients request nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) to get them through a root canal. Yes, we offer laughing gas! Dr. Chang and Dr. Kim are very understanding about dental anxieties and know how important it is for you to receive a root canal for better health.
During your root canal appointment, your dentist will make an opening (if there is not already a hole) to access the inner chamber of your tooth and carefully remove all of the infected pulp. The inside of your tooth will be thoroughly sterilized to remove remaining debris. Once it is cleaned, the tooth will be packed with a medicated material to seal and protect it. Usually, a dental crown or bridge will need to be created and applied to the tooth to give it back its shape and ability to function properly.
Follow-Up
After a root canal, your mouth may feel sensitive or swollen, but this should not last more than a few days and can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers. You should schedule a follow-up appointment as requested after your root canal. Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang will check to see that the infection is gone and that your mouth has healed. After that, you should continue to schedule routine dental exams and cleanings to maintain your dental health.
