Overview

If you have been avoiding appointments due to dental fears and anxieties, learn more about nitrous oxide sedation at Luminous Dental Studio in Frisco, TX. General dentists Dr. Nam Kim and Dr. Minho Chang offer nitrous oxide sedation for both longer procedures and to help patients with dental anxieties and fears during regular appointments. Nitrous oxide (N2O) gas is an effective sedation method that can bring you a sense of calm during your visit. Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is administered by Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang to help you feel more comfortable while still being awake. Schedule an appointment at Luminous Dental Studio to discuss using nitrous oxide or another form of sedation during your appointment. We want you to receive the dental care you need for a healthy life.

Best Candidates

If you are skipping out on your dental exams and cleanings because of treatment anxieties or fear of the dentist, then you are probably an ideal candidate for nitrous oxide sedation. It is safely administered to children and adults alike. We also offer nitrous oxide sedation for patients with special needs, physical limitations, and mental impairment that can make dentistry feel really unsafe or uncomfortable. Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang will go over your medical history, current medications, and your concerns before making a treatment plan that includes using nitrous oxide gas. In conjunction with local anesthesia, N2O sedation can be used for advanced or routine procedures to help minimize your unease. Common reasons we recommend nitrous oxide sedation are the following:

  • You need help relaxing during your dental treatment (especially if you are showing signs of distress)
  • You have a very sensitive gag reflex
  • You have a severe dental phobia that has kept you from seeking treatment

If you have difficulty breathing through your nose, severe nasal congestion, extreme dentist-related phobias, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other similar conditions, then N2O sedation may not be appropriate.

What To Expect

Before your dental treatment begins, the N2O sedation will be administered through a nasal mask. As you gently breathe in the gas and oxygen mixture through your nose only, it will quickly start to relax you. Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang will monitor your response to the gas and adjust the amount released throughout the procedure so you remain safe and comfortable. You should expect tingling in your arms and legs, as well as a feeling of warmth, euphoria, or a sense of well-being as the gas takes effect. Nitrous oxide is normally used with local anesthesia, such as lidocaine injections to numb your mouth. Once the procedure is complete, the gas will be turned off. The N2O gas will evaporate. It will not stay in your body.

Follow-up

There is no need for a follow-up appointment for the use of sedation dentistry; however, you may need to schedule another visit for your treatment. Recovery from N2O sedation is usually immediate once the gas is turned off. You should be able to drive and resume your normal activities when you leave our office. Side effects are uncommon, but you may experience a headache, chills, sweating, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue. Please contact our office if you have any concerns or side effects lasting longer than that day. To minimize the risk of nausea and vomiting, we suggest that you eat a light meal beforehand and wait at least three hours before eating a large meal.
