Night Guards Overview
Teeth grinding at night, also known as bruxism, is a common problem that affects many people. While the most recognizable sign of teeth grinding is on the surface of the teeth, nocturnal bruxism can also cause headaches, tooth pain, inflammation, as well as discomfort in your jaw and neck. To protect your mouth against these effects of teeth grinding, general dentists Dr. Nam Kim and Dr. Minho Chang make custom night guards that can defend your mouth while you sleep. Custom night guards are made from high-quality materials that fit comfortably and help improve the quality of your sleep by reducing teeth grinding and jaw clenching. "When I had my first appointment with Dr. Kim at Luminous Dental Studio, I was instantly reassured that I picked the right dentist to work with my family. He was kind and listened to my concerns about my dental anxieties. With his gentle chairside manner, Dr. Kim was easy to talk. I had some extensive work done that most dentist would rush me through, but when things didn’t go as planned... Dr. Kim kept working through it while making sure I was comfortable. Their state-of-the-art technology is really great too. The intraoral camera displayed my dental concerns front and center in the treatment room on a big screen. It was a great dental experience even though they are never easy for me. Thanks Dr. Kim. Oh, and he made sure to check up on me after my lengthy appointment to make sure I was ok... that’s awesome."- S.C. / Google / Aug 23, 2019

Best Candidates for Night Guards
There are many signs that you may be grinding your teeth and/or clenching your jaw at night. You may wake up with a headache, tightness or pain in your jaw, and swelling in your lower face. Other signs include loose teeth or fillings, worn enamel on the top of your back teeth, tooth sensitivity, and/or a receding gumline. Teeth grinding and clenching at night are typically caused by stress, but it may also be the result of allergies, misaligned teeth, a sleep disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). When Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang gives you a diagnosis of bruxism, they will also try to determine the cause so your night guard may be combined with other therapies for more effective results.
What to Expect with Night Guards
After Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang decides that you have bruxism, we will take 3D digital impressions with our PlanScan® by Planmeca technology and digital x-rays of your mouth so your custom night guard can be created. Luminous Dental Studio will send your information to a dental laboratory where your night guard will be crafted out of high-quality materials. When your night guard is sent back to our office, you will come in to have it fitted. We may make minor adjustments so your night guard fits comfortably. We will also give you instructions on how to care for your night guard so it lasts a long time.
Night Guards Follow-Up
For your night guard to be effective, you need to wear it every night. Your night guard will minimize or eliminate the pain and dental problems caused by bruxism, but if not, please contact our office so Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang can assess for dental issues or try other treatments. To help keep your mouth and night guard healthy, you should properly clean your teeth and guard before and after each use. Your night guard should be brought in to all future appointments so our dental team can make adjustments or repairs as needed.
Your Sleep Is Important, too
Teeth grinding can cause discomfort and pain in a variety of ways. Night guards are a great option to diminish the sleepless nights caused by the annoying symptoms of nocturnal bruxism and jaw clenching. Custom night guards from Luminous Dental Studio can also improve the overall health of your mouth and prevent future issues. If you think that this might be the remedy for you or you would like to learn more, contact our office in Frisco, TX to book a consultation with our general dentists, Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang.
