Overview

At Luminous Dental Studio, our general dentists, Dr. Nam Kim and Dr. Minho Chang, perform two types of frenectomies to remove tissue in the mouth that is restricting movements to impeding on teeth and bite development. With our state-of-the-art Gemini diode laser, our dentists take great care to detach the small fold of tissue in the mouth.

Lingual frenectomy
A lingual frenectomy is carried out if the short frenum restricts the movement of the tongue (also known as being tongue-tied). This is very common for infants and children and important to treat during the formative years for speech development and nutrition.

Labial frenectomy
A labial frenectomy reduces the tissue between the two front teeth on either the upper or lower lip. This extra tissue can create a significant gap that can cause spacing and bite issues in the future.

With the experienced hands of Dr. Kim and Dr. Chang, they can precisely remove this tissue in a quick laser procedure. Call our Frisco, TX office today to learn more.

Best Candidates

If the frenum is short and close to the floor of your mouth, it is a congenital condition known as a tongue-tied or ankyloglossia. Any type of movement you make with your tongue can be problematic if you are tongue-tied as an infant, child, or adult. You may be a candidate for a lingual frenum reduction if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • You have limited movement of the tongue — cannot stick out tongue, move it side to side, or up and down
  • You have difficulties with speech
  • You find eating foods, like ice cream cones, a challenge
  • You may also have trouble with swallowing your food

You may also have frenum that is causing problems with the spacing of your teeth and forming gaps. The thin tissue that connects the upper or lower lip to the gums at the two front teeth can also be reduced or removed with a frenectomy. Why? The tissue may be in the way of your normal teeth development in the front teeth, causing bite abnormalities and spacing issues that may require orthodontics later in life.

What to Expect

A laser frenectomy is a quick and noninvasive technique we use to eliminate the frenum. With or without an anesthetic, the laser will only reduce the precise tissue Dr. Kim or Dr. Chang aim to remove. It also has minimal bleeding and the laser heat seals the skin without the need for stitches.

Follow-Up

Your aftercare instructions will be given to you before you leave our office after the frenectomy. We will have you back in for a follow-up to check your progress and healing. If you have any questions on how to care for the treated area, please call our office anytime. Post-frenectomy stretching may be required if your dentist feels it is necessary. You do not want the tissues to grow back together.
