Overview

Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, may be taken during an annual dental examination to allow a better view of your teeth and gums. These state-of-the-art digital x-rays by NOMAD are diagnostic machines, which allow our dentists, Dr. Minho Chang and Dr. Nam Kim, to identify problems that are not visible to the eye. The digital x-ray reveals numerous dental and oral health problems that can be seen on digital x-rays, such as tooth decay, cavities, cysts, abscesses, bone atrophy, and impactions. When these problems are found early, they can be treated more efficiently with less invasive treatment options. During your annual exam or at a consultation for a restorative or cosmetic dental need at Luminous Dental Studio in Frisco, TX, digital x-rays will greatly assist Dr. Chang or Dr. Kim in accurately diagnosing your needs.

Our Additional Technologies

In addition to our digital x-rays, our dentists also provide the following technologies at Luminous Dental Studio:

Cone beam computed tomography (CT) scan
If you need to have more in-depth dental procedures performed, we can offer you images of your teeth, nerves, soft tissues, and bone quality in a cone beam CT scan. This will give you and Dr. Chang or Dr. Kim the best view of what is happening in your mouth than just a simple x-ray.

Extraoral bitewing x-rays
We have a patented robotic Selectively Compliant Articulated Robot Arm (SCARA) on our Planmeca ProMax machine to take bitewing x-rays from the outside of your mouth. This also means that you do not have to bite down on sensors that can scrape your gums or cause you to have a gag reflex. With an extraoral bitewing, your appointment can go faster because this is a single process (no adjusting or repositioning sensors for different angles). You also benefit from less radiation exposure. For our young patients, the ProMax emits less radiation when it is set to "child mode."

Digital intraoral sensor
Our dentists can enhance the quality of your images with a digital intraoral sensor placed inside of your mouth during your digital x-ray session.

Best Candidates

In most cases, digital x-rays are a part of a routine dental exam. They can be administered as a preventive measure or if you are experiencing dental issues of any kind. Though digital x-rays use less radiation (an ultra-low dose) than traditional x-rays, there is still some radiation involved in the process. Luminous Dental Studio prefers to minimize the amount of exposure that is delivered to every patient. While digital x-rays are normally safe for any patient, it may not be for everyone. If you are a woman who is pregnant or breastfeeding, please tell us at the beginning of the appointment so that extra precautions can be taken for no accidental radiation exposure.

What to Expect

Digital x-rays take approximately 5 – 10 minutes to obtain. Most patients will be given a series of x-rays to cover all areas and angles of the mouth. Then, your digital x-rays are uploaded and saved in your electronic dental record. These images can be viewed during your appointment so that you and Dr. Chang or Dr. Kim can discuss the findings. Your dentist will be able to evaluate what needs to be done if any abnormalities exist and discuss what treatments might be needed to fix the issue.

Follow-Up

A series of digital x-rays are typically taken once a year at your annual dental exam. During some visits, a whole mouth series may be captured to get a comprehensive view of the teeth, gums, and jawbone. Your digital x-rays will be kept with your file at Luminous Dental Studio so we can watch for changes over time and chart any areas of concern.

Here's Looking At You

Digital x-rays are a fantastic tool and technology that can help diagnose and treat oral health problems. As part of a regular dental exam, these x-rays are able to give Dr. Chang and Dr. Kim a better idea of what is happening inside your mouth. Our NOMAD imaging technologies can also reveal the hidden issues that we cannot see with the naked eye. This can help you cut down time in a dental chair and save money because you want to treat issues (even minor ones) before they become painful dental emergencies. For improved dental health, contact our office in Frisco, TX to schedule your next dental exam with digital x-rays.
